Journalist: Do you feel, however, that we’re making progress in this country?
Malcolm X: No, no. I will never say that progress is being made. If you stick a knife in my back 9 inches and pull it out 6 inches, that’s not progress. If you pull it all the way out, that’s not progress. Progress is healing the wound that the blow made. They won’t even admit that the knife is there!
Does this analogy sound familiar?
“I mean, it’s not 1950 anymore!”
“There’s no racism/sexism/classism anymore because things are better!”
Progress is not a solid line, where you step over it and you’re there. It’s a continuum, and to suggest otherwise is complete intellectual laziness, and I will no longer engage in those arguments.
(Also, I’m pretty shocked and appalled that it took me so long to follow MizJenkins because I have not stopped reading her blog for an hour now. Wow.)
I find it hard to agree with Malcolm X who “fought racism” while being extremely racist against white people. Besides that progress literally means, advancement in general, not the accomplishment of a goal.
